Microsoft touts virtualization to reduce complexity

By Peter Galli (eWeek)
Officials say the real power of virtualization comes when companies implement an integrated strategy across their IT infrastructures.
The potential for IT to drive business success has never been greater, but the complexity of IT has also never been higher, Bob Muglia, senior vice president of Microsoft’s server and tools business, will tell customers Jan. 22.
Muglia penned an executive e-mail: “Harnessing the Power of Virtualization for Dynamic IT,” which was sent Jan. 21 to customers, partners in the industry and others who have signed up to receive these periodic e-mails from company executives.
To help customers achieve business success without the IT complexity, Microsoft is focusing on innovation that enables companies to build flexible, intelligent systems that can automatically adjust to changing business conditions by aligning computing resources with strategic objectives, known as Dynamic IT, Muglia wrote in the e-mail.

I definitely agree with Bob Muglia's assertion that the data center is becoming more complex and that an approach like Microsoft’s Dynamic IT is a forward-thinking solution to the IT complexity issue. Of course, even solutions like Dynamic IT cannot completely eliminate all IT failures. While virtualization can provide great cost reduction for companies, it can also heighten the risk for system slowdowns and outages due to the additional complexity this technology and others bring. For this reason, a new systems management approach is needed for companies to truly experience the benefits of virtualization. IT staff, currently mirred in events, need automation of current manual problem solving techniques to allow them the time to implement new initiatives like virtualization. There are new systems management solutions available that provide more intelligent alerting, allowing a more proactive problem solving approach with far less manual effort.
