Aside ‘Apple Day’ – there’s debate about the Fed, about unemployment that many pretended was not problematic (I argued double-counting of jobs not worker levels was revealing of the inflationary pressures on many families). depositphotos All that as the unemployment data dovetailed with my view, of people having to work harder or just ‘more’ in-order to maintain a particular level of ‘life’, and so that is not exactly simply an example of growth as was officially contended. As to Apple (AAPL), nothing today is seen ‘by most’ as driving the next cycle. I demur as I was impressed and see this as an revolutionary project handled cleverly, so as not to disrupt the basics, and overwhelm people with new technology. In my mind it’s a revolutionary change made ‘evolutionary’ in ‘practical use’, plus they’re basically telling you this Fall you’ll be able to buy a $1000. phone or a MAC laptop that can interact with each other, without being a software genius and taking Siri, which was trailing, to a higher level vs. Google or Microsoft. I worry that Tim Cook let the ‘Event’ go on for over 90 minutes (which suggests a low level of confidence or perhaps he really wanted developers to grasp it). Now… AI.. with a spin on the category: ‘Apple Intelligence’. Excellent with ChatGPT built-in, but exclusively and differentiated from Microsoft Co-pilot, by simply keep on-device ‘privacy’ unless ‘more intelligence’ is requested. For weeks/months I’ve hope Apple would not build the pile of ‘code’ that is Siri into a mountain of insurmountable code subject to ‘landslides’ essentially. So, I am excited that they were very clever, and did NOT entirely overwhelm what is already is fairly sophisticated Siri Machine Learning product. To wit: if ‘basic’ Siri (enhanced from before) doesn’t have the knowledge it will request YOUR permission to access more. That means it’s redirecting a query from ‘within’ the devices walled access to ChatGPT, which opens knowledge of the world, when requested. And nothing stays on the Servers about you or on the device about whatever you obtained from ‘the world’s’ knowledge base. So I was pretty impressed. Sam Altman (Open AI) was said to be present but did not appear on camera, but obviously it’s all being integrated effective with IOS 18 this Fall as well as the new MAC OS (Sequoia) and so on. Only slight reference was made to the assist of ‘powerful new processors’, and occurs to me that while they ‘may’ reserve some aspects for M-class Apple processors, it would work pretty well enough on earlier GPU’s/CPU’s, including faster Intel chips too. They’re not going to say that, and we’ll just have to see what limits -if any- are placed when upgrading to new IOS or MAC OS later this year.Of course, Apple is trying to make a ‘better’ private relationship with AI than all the big competitors, while to me the biggest improvements (since we knew of the key AI coming embrace)…were in EMAIL and MESSAGES…since for the first time there will be easy ways to have AI automatically prioritize / separate financial or bills or appointment reminders from marketing or correspondence, helping avoid a deluge of email to shuffle through every day at risk of losing or missing an important one with some urgency. I’m sure that’s happened to a lot of us, and then we have to apologize for a late response if we ever saw it (I have a tendency to delete between 50-80 emails every morning and shuffle in a fast pace through them to see what is actually requiring attention).By the way Elon Musk is totally wrong in his tweet. Apple is NOT integrating Open Ai at the device (IOS / OS) level but giving user the ability to link to that ‘if’ they decide too. And then it’s encrypted. This time I disagree with Elon. A final thought on this: ChatGPT works fine on current iPhones, this integration is an Apple effort (yes) to streamline the process, but as even on iPhone 16’s it going to offload queries to the Cloud, you really don’t need more ‘power’.
