Manchester United has launched a Web3 football game, ‘Fantasy United,’ on the Tezos blockchain for the 2024/25 season, said the club in a recent announcement.Alongside the new game, the club has unveiled Player Trading Cards which feature all first-team players from the men’s squad in various editions, including Classic, Rare, and Ultra-Rare.These collectible cards are updated with real-time stats throughout the season. The team said fans could use their trading cards to build a five-player squad in ‘Fantasy United.’The game also allows fans to compete against friends, participate in mini-leagues with United players, and earn points based on real-life player performance.
“Player Trading Cards allow United fans to collect the whole men’s first team squad, to see those collectibles evolve throughout the season as games are played and goals are scored, and have the ability to play those cards in an exciting fantasy football game,” said Ronan Joyce, director of digital innovation at Manchester United.
The project is built on the Tezos blockchain and is part of a successful ongoing collaboration between Manchester United and the Tezos ecosystem.
The club aims to foster an active fan community through interactive features, which it achieved with ‘The Devils’, its original digital collection developed in partnership with Tezos.
“Player Trading Cards and Fantasy United is an innovative use of blockchain technology to enable United fans to have a deeper connection with their favorite club. Through dynamically updating collectibles, supporters will be able to cheer on their heroes and watch how the season develops,” said Sunil Singhvi, head of culture at Trilitech, Tezos R&D Hub.
Player Trading Cards are available in packs of seven for £3. Fans who own the ‘The Devils’ collection have gained early access to the cards.
